Wonderland Avenue (part1)

Wonderland Avenue (part1)

Born in west Hollywood
A child with ADHD
He had a somewhat privileged childhood
Compared to you and me

His parents were happily married
But sensed he wasn’t normal from around the age of two
Divorce was on the cards
After he turned the house into a reptile Zoo

His stepdad was named Clarence and he took no shit
Ruled with and iron fist until one day Danny had enough of it

Excluded for blowing up the school toilets
He would get in trouble any way he could
Until a chance incounter with a band called The Doors
Changed his life for good

He started skipping school
So he could hang out with the band
His class mates took the piss
But his life was anything but bland

His father found out about his truency
To his step dad he had no explanation
It seemed to Danny that schooling was getting in the way of his education

This behaviour continued until he reached his late teens, all he wanted was freedom...
He wanted to chase his dreams

One time after Danny and his father had had a particularly bad fight
Jim said maybe I should meet with him
Try to straighten things out...Make everything alright

Jim met with Danny and his father
In the local bar café
Jim didn’t give a good first impression
Sinking several Margaretas well before midday

Dannys father asked Jim
"Do you always drink so much?"
Jim replied to Dannys father
"Only in the company of hypocrites and such"

Jim said to Dannys father
"Please tell me what kind of kicks from life you get"....
-"Well I like to go to Vegas..
Try my luck at craps and Rulette"

Jim turned to Danny and said
"I wish you all the best kid, good luck
You sure no how to pick 'em
A gambler and a drunk!"

Danny chose Jim over his father
After the huge row that had just ensued
Not less than two months later
Danny couldn't believe what he heard on the news

Jim had been found dead
In the bathtub in his hotel room
Apparently it was heart failure
At only 27 years of age his idol had been took too soon

This is only one half of the story
The book it's based on is quite long
I look forward to completing the poem
This is the end of part 1

Thanks for your kind words Tony. Yes it is the Sugarman memoir,  the book is definitely worth a read, it's one of my favourites and I've read well over one hundred. I'm sure you'd be a blast to hang out with too. I haven’t even started on the second half yet though, it may take me a while.

Take care mate - Syd
