Poem -

Your Rainbow Versus Mine

Red,
The color most frequently associated with love.
My mind ties it with the blood of my enemies and brothers.

Orange,
Most commonly associated with a citrus fruit,
I tend to think of the color of the clay we are sleeping on tonight.

Yellow,
Most people connect it with a type of flower.
I however, think of the bright light my newfound brothers say to have seen in their last breaths.

Green,
It’s everywhere, associated with grass, trees, and life.
It’s almost suffocating me in this jungle, but I have learned to appreciate its camouflage.

Blue,
You think of the clear sky, or perhaps the ocean you swam in on vacation.
I think of those blue colored berries we desperately ate that made us all sick.

Purple,
Many associate it with another flower, or a scent commonly used in candles.
I am reminded of the medal awarded to my brothers who have left me.

White,
You may think of pureness and clean,
I think of the powder in the grenade I just tossed over the hilltop.

Black,
The only color we may commonly associate
Death. The same color as the glossy casket that my best friend is sent home in.

Anything I associated with these colors was quickly destroyed the day I stepped on another country’s soil.
Everyone has their own rainbow
You have yours, and I have mine.

A harrowing, insightful read, and a reminder of individual experiences that change how things are perceived.! Honest and brave. My respect to you.☺

Hi Shayla,

Very moving and powerful words. “Rainbows” all in the eyes of the beholder.
Welcome!
Robyn

Rainbows.
I like rainbows, but not so much now since the hijack.

very good read.
makes me think about other cultures.
the complexity, the beauty, the warmth of a homely gathering of the indigenous.
all met with nuclear fission, large atom splitting, massive amounts of energy releasing. flattening all the beauty within to nothing.
not to mention our own in the USA

war.
will we ever learn?
