Poem -

your wife

your wife

if I were not your wife
who would you return to
who would you tell
        you are tired
at the end of the day
who would have your dinner ready
 who would iron your shirts
 who would take care
     of our children
in this home of ours and
who would love you more
if I were not your wife

you leave for work
when dawn is barely breaking
      you give me a kiss
      you adjust your coat
      you put your hat on
you walk four or five steps and
      you turn to see
in case I'm still watching you
you give me another kiss
      sent by air and
 then you go smiling

sometimes I think foolishly
‘if something happened to you
what would become of me
to where would my dreams fly and
who would love me more?
if I were not your wife’
