Ambience

Ambience

My favourite place has to be the ruins of an old monastry i had visited as a child. The remains were so daunting as they stood high on the hill side.

As the wind howls through what was once a beautiful stained glass window you can taste the nostaligia within. If you listen carefully you can hear the soft gregorian chants coming from what was once the chapel.Close your eyes and you can see row upon row of monks head bent in prayer.I used to live by the ruins yet i never took notice of them until one moonlit night upon looking out of my window i saw the shadowy figures of a group of monks gliding towards the westen wing.I decided to research the history of the monastry and found it was built in 1815 and had burned to the ground in 1890.All the monks inside had perished because they had put their faith in god and believed that he would save them.

Every night if you listen carefully you can hear the gregorian chants, the voices so sweet yet haunting,You can feel the pain in their voices.

If you close your eyes you can see their faces so solemn as they sing in unison, their voices echoing through the chapel.

The ruins are no longer there for in their place is a beautiful building, windows bright and gleaming each depicting a tale, each one the window to the soul of those inside. The architecture is magnificent. The gargoyles sit on their haunches guarding the heavy oak door.As you step inside you are greeted by a kalidescope of colours as the moonlight shines throught the stain glass windows.

To your left is the chapel where gregorian chants waft down the corridor,to your right the dormitory where many a monk rest his weary head.

The monastry is haunting yet fascinating in a spooky kind of way, nostalgia oozes from every crack of every stone. The atmosphere is one of serenity because once inside nothing and no one can hurt you.As you drink in the  ambience the monastry starts to fade bit by bit,the gregorian voices start to become softer and softer and your heart sinks as the monks start to dissappear.

The gregorian monks songs are very haunting yet relaxing and the monastry is a place i can lose myself,in a world where companionship and inner peace are more important than material things.Maybe we can learn a thing or two from their simplicity.
