Essay on Media in the USA

Offering a rant about all the violence, prejudice, and sexism that is shoved in our faces by media, even films and some music.

Politics in the USA have become a game of who is the best narcissist to emulate, and who has the most corporate support. It makes me sick. We really need true leaders for this country, people who cannot be bought, and don’t revel in media attention. Our media focuses on fear, violence, and predators; exhibits sexism, and agism.

Why do people make purchases based on sexual attraction potential, which is currently the biggest advertising hook? Of course most advertising and news is geared to a 3rd grade level of education, and panders to our most basic instincts for security, safety, and sex. Really, you can’t buy those, they are not for sale anywhere. I suppose you could say you can buy sex, and you can, but it is illegal in most states in this country. The media today focuses on maintaining a level of fear in humans, so they will behave “according to white standards of society.”

It is time for all people to see that we live in a diverse world, and that prejudice and violence are born of fear, as is sexism. Television and radio media are rarely journalistic anymore, they are sensationalistic. I know there are good journalists out there, but to access them, you must read certain publications and newspapers, and books, and be selective in your choice of internet sites.

Now I’m going to introduce hope. There are humans who are not racing for the “American dream,” they are interested in what they have to offer to humanity. They can be in any income bracket, and of any sex or culture. They are progressive thinkers, and are generally very kind and intelligent people. These humans also usually think outside the box. They gather information from different sources; experience, observation, education, reading, listening, and they are active in our society today. Music can be a universal language, both instrumentally and in well written lyrics. Music has been in every age of humanity, throughout cultures.

I have no interest in going into any diatribe against musical expression. Thankfully there is a great selection of music types, and with YouTube, many musical types can be experienced. Technology can be a wonderful tool!
