An Island Adventure On Mars

An Island Vacation On Mars
By: Katrina Clark
In the year of 2016, space travel was the most popular form of transportation. Different people were traveling through each dimension in space every day. Most of them were scientists, some where just yearning to learn about other dimensions than ours. For example, Kenny and his girlfriend, Karen, decided they wanted to explore another planet, so they decided to take a space rocket0like shuttle through outer space…
It was on a Thursday night when Karen was getting ready for their adventure. She packed all sorts of things, not knowing what they would discover. She packed summer clothes and winter clothes, as well; Kenny did the same. He even brought a video camera and objects to create a time machine that would take him right back to that planet whenever he wanted! By the next hour, Karen was climbing into the shuttle with Kenny right behind her. The shuttle was so interesting, Karen thought. It had everything from buttons to steering wheels to lights. There were two steering wheels and one large, loveseat-looking chair. It looked pretty comfy, because the chair had a beanbag cushion on the seat and the back. There was a button on the left side to make the chair transform into a king-sized bed. Above the chair was a medium-sized skylight so you could view the stars, comets and planets as you zoomed by. The space shuttle even had its own mini fridge! There were hot pink and jet-black colored dice hanging from the hook on the skylight. The inside of the shuttle looked electronic, like being inside a video game, with buttons and lights splashed all over the walls and some on the ceiling. There were turning dials all over the back and sidewalls. Square and rectangle lights spread out, but lined up by colors in blue, red, green, yellow and other beautiful lights shining brightly in the dim light from the skylight.
“So, what do you think, Karen?” Kenny asked.
Karen was so speechless, it took her five seconds to find her voice.
“It’s so fascinating!” She finally exclaimed. “I never believed I would ever live to see the inside of a space shuttle.”
“Neither did I, but here we are. I believe it’s time for takeoff. Climb into the seat beside me,” replied Kenny, “and push that green button beside you Karri.”
“Which one?”
“The green one.”
As soon as Karen pushed the tiny, sparkly green button, the shuttle began to hum and the walls shook slightly, a signal it was starting up. The engine sounded as if it were about to blow up for about ten seconds, then quieted down. In the next thirty minutes, they were in space, traveling thirty-five miles an hour. Outer space was even more amazing set before their very eyes, than pictured in a textbook or magazine. The stars were bigger and brighter, closer, compared to tiny and dim from little Earth. In fact, the planet Earth was bigger, too. It looked more like cloudy water and endless land than a globe of cloudy land and endless waters.
“Remember our goal, Kenny, to find another planet with beings that live and breathe, that nobody has discovered yet.” Karen said. “You never know what we may find.”
“True. That’s very true, Karen,” replied Kenny.
“ Yes, it is. You know, we could reveal what we find when we find it.”
“But what would we possible find? There can’t be—there can’t possibly be—,”
“Calm down, yes there just might be. Why do you think we are on this journey?”
Kenny just ignored her questions and was going crazy, asking himself all these different questions and protesting to them. Oh wow, he’s talking to himself again, Karen thought. While he was doing his thing over there, walking around the shuttle, Karen decided to take control of the shuttle. They were just about to pass Mars, when Karen swerved and headed to Mars. Kenny was still throwing questions at himself when Karen was landing the space shuttle. It made a whirring sound as it flitted downwards. Kenny didn’t even hear the sound; she had to distract him to get his attention. After explaining where they were, Karen watched Kenny’s mouth fly open in surprise.
“Where—where are we?” Kenny asked for the tenth time.
“We are on planet Mars.”
“That’s not possible—”
“Yes, it is possible because we’re here. We’re on Mars, Kenny” Karen cut him off.
Kenny still had that surprised look on his face. Karen had to reassure him it was okay about ten or twenty times before he would calm down. He was so shocked that they were actually on Mars. It took him awhile to close his mouth.
