Leakey Socket Lost Her Diamonds

Everyone in the Shady Forest likes to get along with each other, especially the Socket family. They are a family of sapsuckers, and they moved here from way down south. Most days in the Shady Forest, are quiet and peaceful. But, today is a big day in the Shady Forest.Â
To day is Alicia Socket’s birthday! Her parents, Jane & John Socket, had planned a surprise party for Alicia. There was to be, cake, ice cream, games, balloons and a magician. Alicia was going to be so surprised! Some of her family was coming and all of her friends were coming too!
Sweet old Uncle Monkey boy has been a friend of the family ever since they moved to the Shady Forest. Great-Uncle Victor the whippoorwill and his wife Loretta the swan will be here. Auntie Babe the bluebird and her best friend Cyndi the centipede was also coming.
Alicia spent the night at her best friend Ethan the Mohawk bat’s house while her parents decorated their yard; Ethan calls her Leaky Socket. The decorations were all done. The balloons were all up. The cake was baked. The candles were on the cake. The back yard was beautiful. The family and friends were all here. “Now all we need,” said Alicia’s mom, “Is the birthday Girl.”Â
   As Alicia and Ethan swooped in from their sleepover the crowd yelled,  S U R P R I S E  ! ! !
Alicia was very excited, and then the crowd sang, Happy Birthday. They all had a nice lunch, some cake and ice cream, and played a few games. They played pin the Ant on the Anthill, follow the leader, Simon says & musical mushrooms.Â
Just when Alicia thought it couldn’t get any better, the Magician started his show. The Magnificent Rudy the Rabbit and his lovely assistant Ruby the Rabbit, they were so amazing. After the magic show, it was time to open the presents.Â
Ethan the Mohawk bat said, “Open mine first Leaky Socket.” Alicia opened Ethan’s present, it was a can of silly string. “Oh, Oh, me next,” said Cyndi the centipede, she gave Leaky Socket some leg warmers. Cyndi said, “When the caterpillars shed their furry skin to become beautiful butterflies, they just throw these away. I had my cousin Clarence the caterpillar save me some before his family flew to Mexico.Â
Alicia got some new clothes, toys from her friends, a new brush, come & mirror set. The most wonder full gift of all was from her mom & dad, some big plastic jewel earrings, a huge jewel ring, a matching necklace and a giant jewel crown. The jewelry was so beautiful that Alicia began to cry, “I’m so happy, thank you mom & dad.”
After opening all the presents, the kids went back to playing games. As it started to get dark, all the families went home. “Let’s pick up all your presents Alicia,” said mom. “OK mom,” said Alicia. She helped pick up all the balloons, throw away the paper plates and put her toys in her room.Â
In the morning after a good nights sleep, Alicia wanted to play with all her new toys, but she couldn’t find her diamond jewelry.
Alicia looked outside in the yard where they had all played. She looked downstairs in the living room, the kitchen & the back porch where mom washes clothes. She looked upstairs in all the bedrooms and the bathroom. But, she could not find her diamonds. Alicia runs down stairs with her eyes full of tears and cries to her mom, “I can’t find my diamonds! Maybe somebody stole them!”Â
Alicia’s mom smiles and says, “Calm down Alicia.” “Last night after everyone left, and you were in bed; your father and I sat outside for a few minutes before we went to bed.” “We talked about how much fun everyone had at the party. When we were ready to go to bed ourselves, we saw something shining in the moonlight.” “What was it Mommy?” asked Alicia. “It was your diamonds, shining in the moonlight,” said her mother. “They looked so beautiful, but I knew that you would not be happy if some packrat picked them up and took them to his house so I put them in my jewelry box for safekeeping.”
Alicia’s mom gave her back her diamonds and Alicia never lost them again. Alicia thought, “This was the happiest birthday that I have ever had!”Â
