Poem:
EXIST
We all walk everyday on earth,
We just exist! Yes, we do,
A mere Existence becomes a superficiality!
Flamboyant dreams visit our eyes every night
Even before the dawn sets they just disappear
Truly a sad plight!
We begin hastily searching a space around us,
When Nothing substantial is found,
We then begin to walk with crowds .
Desperate to be a part to merely fit,
Only to be acting like one of them!,
Is that the real us, or have we become puppets?
Oppressing our dreams giving us a feeling of being a sacrificial mortal.
We were not born like this,
We were never meant to be,
Looking back at the opportunities we know we have already missed ...
Regret the time we could never fulfil them,
It's a sad line of lie,
We know in heart of our hearts we tread upon.
We don't live anymore,
We don't we all know,
Living as it seems comes to a halt,
We only begin to exist!
We just only exist!

ANALYSIS
"Exist" by Anju Kapoor delves into the existential crisis that plagues many individuals. "We all walk every day on earth,  We just exist!" The repetition of "exist" emphasizes a sense of passivity and detachment. The phrase "mere Existence becomes superficiality" suggests that the quality of life has been reduced to a shallow, surface-level experience. The use of "superficiality" conveys the emptiness felt by individuals who merely go through the motions of life without truly engaging with it.
The poet describes "Flamboyant dreams" visiting the eyes every night, only to "disappear" before dawn. This imagery signifies the transient nature of aspirations and the fleeting hope that accompanies them. The word "flamboyant" suggests that these dreams are vibrant and full of life, but their disappearance indicates the harsh reality that extinguishes them. The "sad plight" captures the melancholic realization that these dreams are often unattainable.
The poem shifts to the idea of individuals searching for meaning in their lives. The "space around us" represents the quest for purpose and identity. However, the line "Nothing substantial is found" reflects the void felt by the poet and many others. This void leads people to "walk with crowds," a metaphor for conformity and losing oneself in the collective. The poem questions whether this conformity is a true reflection of oneself or merely a facade, as suggested by the lines: "Is that the real us, or have we become puppets?"
The phrase "Oppressing our dreams" conveys the self-sacrifice individuals make to fit into societal norms. The metaphor of being "a sacrificial mortal" emphasizes the loss of individuality and the cost of conforming. The poem's tone turns regretful as it reflects on "opportunities we know we have already missed." This reflection highlights the consequences of not pursuing one's true passions and the "sad line of lie" individuals live by when they settle for less.-WILLIAMSJI MAVELI
