Stone

Stone

The girl, dressed lightly in a white tea dress and white chunky heels, glided up the steps. The stairs were graciously entangled with flowers of the richest, most righteous purple hues. The vibrant flowers seemed to waltz with the hard concrete, each equally personified and personable.

The girl delighted in it, her steps bouncing and her toes curling around the stems as she continued walking up the ceaseless flower entombed staircase. He heels made a hollow sound on the stairs as she now trudged up them, her shoes sometimes getting ensnared in the vines. She put her arms out to steady herself as she kept walking.

Pretty soon the vines and the flowers started to ensnare her wrists and her ankles. Despite the lightness of the flora, she felt heavy as she slogged up the stairs.

After she had been walking for sometime, she stopped to catch her once effortless breath. Even when stopped the flowers still seemed to climb and swirl themselves around her, like chains. As she started to walk again, small whispers filled the air. They were delicate and effervescent; as if the flowers had decided to chant.

The girl, her dress slightly torn from the now thorns, started to dash up the stairs. As she did, the whispers grew louder and the flowers became more aggressive. They wrapped around her waist and neck and tried to pull her down. Her felt felt like concrete as it took more and more effort to climb the final few step to the top.

As she could barely breathe, she ascended the final few steps by crawling. Just as the flowers descended on her, them covering and controlling most of her body, her eyes graced the top of the steps. Before her was an array of stone garden statues, surprisingly life-like. They were all people, in various positions and a few key expressions.

Predominantly, wide eyed and graceless fear.

Just as she reached out, to grab a hold of the nearest one, the flowers completed their conquest and covered every inch of her.

Her hand held, solidified in mid air, as the flowers retreated back down the steps, leaving a new stone statue in their wake.
