The Failure of The Sega 32X

   Back in 1995, I made the mistake of buying the 32X. For those too young to remember, the 32X was an add on for the Sega Genesis. It changed the Genesis from a 16 Bit console to a 32 Bit console. It fit on top of the Genesis and could play both regular Genesis games and the 32X Genesis games. It could play every regular Genesis game except 'Virtua Racing'. I'll take an educated guess and say that it couldn't play Virtua Racing because it had the SVP chip inside the cartridge.
   Not all 32X games were cartridge games. Some of the games were on CD. But to be able to play them, you had to have the Sega CD add on for the Genesis as well.
   Sega was also going to make the Sega Neptune. The Neptune would've been a console that played 32X and the regular Genesis games. But they cancelled it.  
  I think I may know what could've made the 32X more successful. More games and a better DOOM. I bought the 32X for one reason only. Because I could play DOOM on it. But the 32X DOOM was a disappointment.
  DOOM was originally a PC game and the 32X version was missing a lot of levels. If the 32X DOOM had included about 10 more levels, had a couple of extra improvements and had been included with the 32X add on for free, Sega might have sold many more 32X units.
  Back in 1982, Coleco sold many thousands of Colecovisions for one reason only. Donkey Kong came with it for free. And during the mid 90s, DOOM was as popular as Donkey Kong once was. DOOM was huge. Most everybody loved it. I believe that if the 32X DOOM had been better and had been included free, the 32X might possibly have been a success.
   But DOOM was sold separately for about $60-$65. Many people (including myself) were disappointed when they bought the 32X DOOM because it sucked. Sadly, it looks like the Sega 32X was destined to fail.
