SHELTER
The retiring sun has forsaken me
In a haunted dark forest.
Hastening clouds grasp away
My will and whim.
Confusing alien tress staring
bewildered still aloof.
Dusk is cascading fast
Devouring the branches,
leaves and even roots.
Evolving howling, and yipping
Piercing my writhing senses,
horror turn this woods
into a cacophonic den.
There may be thieves and barbarians
behind the shadows.
Doused in the milky radiance of the
Crescent moon
upon thy forehead
I step forth -
For my destiny,
an ember of burning love
Glitter in that matted locks
And the ocean inside
Will not calm down
Until I reach unto thy feet.

"Shelter" by Jayalakshmi Karindalam is a poem that depicts a realistic imagery into themes of isolation, fear, and the search for solace or refuge. Through vivid imagery and evocative language, the poet transports the reader into a hauntingly dark forest where the reader finds themselves alone and vulnerable.
The poem begins with a sense of abandonment as the sun sets, leaving the reader alone in the dense  forest. The imagery of "haunted dark forest" and "confusing alien trees" sets a tone of foreboding and unease. The mention of hastening clouds and dusk cascading fast adds to the feeling of impending darkness and isolation.
As the night deepens, the reader's senses are assaulted by unsettling sounds, described as "evolving howling, and yipping" that pierce their senses, creating a sense of terror and disorientation. The forest transforms into a cacophonic den, where shadows conceal potential dangers, symbolized by the mention of "thieves and barbarians." Despite the fear and uncertainty, there is a glimmer of hope represented by the "milky radiance of the Crescent moon." This imagery suggests a source of light and guidance amidst the darkness, offering a semblance of comfort and direction.
The curious reader finds courage within themselves to step forth into the night, driven by a sense of destiny and an "ember of burning love." This love is depicted as a powerful force that motivates the persona to overcome their fears and continue their journey, despite the chaos and uncertainty surrounding them.
The poem concludes with a sense of determination as the persona vows to persevere until they reach their destination, symbolized by reaching "unto thy feet." This final line suggests a longing for connection and security, perhaps seeking refuge or sanctuary in the embrace of a loved one.
Overall, "Shelter" explores themes of fear, isolation, and the search for solace amidst darkness. Through its vivid imagery and emotive language, the poem captures the complex interplay between terror and resilience, highlighting the enduring power of love and determination in the face of adversity.
