Woe To Wishes

There was a little mouse who lived in the Duchess’s house.
She severed her the finest tea everyday
while she was bent on one knee.
On a very small piano she played
many a fine tune.
Her playing never ended too soon.
The Duchess lived in a very big house.
There was a lot of work to do for a little mouse.
When the Duchess would go to sleep
the little mouse would go
into her home in a hole in the wall and weep.
Her tears landed on a shell of a beetle
who brought her a wishing kettle.
The beetle told her to cry no more
as he crawled across the floor.
He put the kettle upon her table and said
“put a wish in it when you’re able.”
She asked him “how many wishes can I make?”
and he replied “ There is only one it will take.”
Then the beetle disappeared before her very eyes.
He left without saying any good-byes.
The little mouse knew dawn was soon to come
and again to the Duchess’s side she would have to run.
Hastily she wrote down her wish of having a royal dish.
She wished for the Duchess to turn into a huge block cheese
so, she thought, she could live a life of ease.
Suddenly, the block of cheese manifested outside her door
and in an instant she knew the Duchess lived no more.
There was too much cheese for one little mouse to eat
and it spoiled.
She couldn’t stop starvation no matter how hard she toiled.
She lay down in her little bed and passed away.
Her ghost is now internally serving the duchess, some say.
Be careful what you wish for in life.
Don’t make wishes in haste and/or in strife.
Always keep in mind that God is not blind.
Know that all good deeds are counted in heaven.
It truly matters to make the best of what you've been given.
Good things come to those who wait
and you'll endure without hate.
Treasures await those who don't hesitate
to count their blessings and of them appreciate.
To those who strive to do their best
awaits forever glorious rest.
