I Had A Dream...

A famous man had a dream
In his dream he saw a time when all
people would be treated fairly
That color or ethnicity or gender would
not matter anymore
That one could walk arm in arm
With your opposite and find peace
I grew up under the shadow of
nuclear bomb scares and racism
Of damn hippies and the Viet Nam War
IT was a time of big dreams and big
atrocities..
Of a President that had a hope of camelot
and ended up just being a man
But for a brief time .. there was a hope
That one man could make a difference
Because it is true that one man in a
single act can make a difference
For the good or the bad
What happened to George Floyd
Should never, ever happen in our society
Not today not tomorrow not EVER.
It is beyond unacceptable
It is an act of inhumanity that
Will define us
A man is laying in the gutter
Head resting on the cement
The law enforcement officer
Is calmly placidly resting his weight
on the black man's neck
While you see his face distort
The fear on his face
He pleads that he cannot breathe
The officer, with other officers
Calmly walking past him
As if it was another day at the office
While a few beg the officer to stop
To even check his pulse
When after eight long minutes
HE stands up George Floyd is dead
But the officer does not initiate CPR
Something he is certified to do
Something he is bound by his duty to do
He gazed as if he had stomped on a bug
He was unperturbed
IF we are ever going to be a country
Where we live by the ideals of our founders
THan we had better take a good hard look
In a mirror
If good people stand by and do nothing
While tyranny and atrocities are done
Than we are a part of the evil
If we do nothing when the George Floyd's
Of this world are murdered
Right before our very eyes
Right in the midst of a busy city street
Right in front of three other officers
What in God's name is to become of us?
I shudder to look
