Poem -

a soup line

a soup line

a soup line
in the queue of hollowed eyes
a shuffle of feet
a sigh of times
souls draped in the grey of dawn
waiting for a spoonful
hope foregone

faces like faded photographs
crumpled edges
broken halves
whispers of dreams
now just steam
rising from bowls
a forgotten gleam

hands like withered autumn leaves
grasping at warmth
as heart grieves
the line stretches
a serpent of sorrow
no promise of work
no better tomorrow

children's eyes too old too wise
seeing through the grown-up lies
mothers' arms empty and frail
clutching the future a ghostly veil

men with hats over hearts once bold
now just stories
untold old
the soup line
a river of despair
where hope is scarce
as a millionaire's care
