Heirs of History - Chapter Two
The city's largest and most modern medical college was renowned for its magnificent buildings, lush gardens, and state-of-the-art classrooms. The sun was high in the sky as Sabrina and Alyan, deep in conversation, walked out of the café and into the college corridors. Their footsteps broke the silence of the hallway.
Alyan quipped playfully, “Sabrina, look at Sanan. He’ll still be lost in his books as if the weight of the entire world rests on his shoulders.”
Sabrina smiled softly, replying, “Sanan has always been like this. But his words carry depth. Maybe today, too, he’ll introduce us to some new philosophy.”
When they reached the classroom door, the scene inside was exactly as they had imagined. Sanan sat at his usual spot, head bent over a book. His fingers slowly turned the pages, his forehead etched with deep lines of thought.
As Alyan entered the classroom with a bright smile, she announced, “Oh look, here’s our philosopher, busy unraveling the mysteries of the world!”
The two walked over to Sanan’s bench and sat on either side of him. Alyan gave him a light tap on the back and laughed, “Where is my studious lion lost today?”
Sanan closed his book, took a deep breath, and shifted slightly. “Alyan, don’t bother me. Today’s lecture is highly sensitive, and I’m preparing for it in advance.”
Alyan burst out laughing. “Oh, are they teaching us to make atom bombs today?”
Her tone was teasing, enjoying the irritation on Sanan’s face.
Sabrina, always intrigued by serious topics, ignored Alyan’s joke and asked, “What kind of sensitive topic?”
Sanan’s expression turned more serious, his tone deeper. “More dangerous than an atom bomb. A hundred times more lethal. But explaining it to you two is pointless since you always turn everything into a joke.”
Alyan feigned shock. “Oh! Is that so? Stop keeping us in suspense!”
At that moment, the professor entered the room. He was a middle-aged man with a face that reflected experience and eyes that held a quiet seriousness. Silence enveloped the class.
Turning toward the board, the professor said, “Today’s topic is about human biological creation and genetic information. It’s a subject that will challenge your understanding and perhaps leave many of you amazed.”
He drew a syringe on the board and began explaining:
“Imagine a man and a woman injecting their sperm or ovum into another woman. The child born will inherit the genetic traits of the man and woman who provided the material, not the woman who gives birth. This means the woman would merely act as a host, with her DNA not contributing to the child’s genetic makeup.”
The class fell silent. The topic was new and extraordinary for everyone. Some eyes were filled with wonder, others were lost in thought, while a few faces carried questioning expressions.
Alyan leaned closer to Sabrina and whispered, “Really? This feels like science fiction!”
Sanan, who was intently listening to every word, took a deep breath and said, “It’s reality. This is the marvel of science, but it also entangles us in profound ethical questions.”
After class, the five friends gathered in the park, holding cups of coffee. The lecture was the central topic of their discussion. Alyan joked, “This feels straight out of a movie. Do you think we might all be part of some test tube baby experiment?”
Fred laughed and responded, “If that were true, my jokes wouldn’t be this epic.”
Sabrina, always drawn to deep conversations, turned to Sanan and asked, “You said this topic is more dangerous than an atom bomb. Can you explain why?”
Sanan placed his cup on the table and replied, “It’s not just a question of science. It’s a question of humanity, ethics, and the future of society. If humans can control creation like this, it gives us immense power but also drags us into moral dilemmas. It questions how far we can interfere in nature’s work.”
Joey, usually the quiet one, spoke with uncharacteristic seriousness, “And if this power is misused? Won’t we be pushing our future generations toward unforeseen destruction?”
For a moment, everyone fell silent. Along with the aroma of coffee, their deep thoughts seemed to dissolve into the air. This discussion wasn’t just about a simple lecture; it marked the beginning of their understanding of life’s new dimensions.
