Zen gardens

A pulp fiction

Now usually one guards against one's shadow.
In Zen gardens case it was apparent the shadow

Had consumed him. He was in his 60's and lived

On Baynes Street. He liked to build gardens.

Once I saw a Buddha, or maybe it was even a

Shiva in the garden he built that before was just

A patch of hard ground and loose dirt.

Hence the name Zen gardens. You'll find out how

Sarcastic this is later.

He'd build other gardens as well, like one for his

Neighbour on the ground floor. Were he was.

I was on the third.

The top floor, so the garden I cultivated was a

Metaphoric garden that was a kind of peace treaty

With my neighbours of which a few had some

Nefarious dealings you had to look the other way

From.

Zen gardens wasn't so turn-the-other-cheek. He was

A drunk and an obnoxious loud one, verbally abusive.

I found this to be the opposite of what it was to

Grow a garden, maybe those gardens were because

He couldn't build a relationship with his neighbours.

That was the irony. And it struck me as tragic.

Maybe one day he will realize the neighbours had never tried to build some sort of friendship with him. 🌹

Perhaps in life we learn that people are not always worth it but there is beauty in this person ... in his gardens regardless. Good write x
