A bird at flight

You flew atop my shoulder with a friendly greeting.
I caressed you as i declared you mine.
You follow as I walk home, still on my shoulder.
“Your home now”
You smile, sitting on my finger waiting.
I place you inside a cage, then lock it.
You sit, clueless, then attempt flight.
But you no longer carry that freedom.
Your happiness wilters away, along with the flowers outside the window.
You peck away at the seeds I have provided for you.
I walk off to head outside, then I notice something…
You admire the birds outside, still ahold of their freedom.
I sigh, finally understanding.
I open the cage, you ponder at the opening.
Then step out, unsure what is on the other side.
Wings spread, and head high, you fly away.
Free at last..
