A Candy Cane Christmas

A Candy Cane Christmas

There were candy canes
and glittered stars
A plethora of lights
All sparkling in their merry hues
As the world was turning white

There were children huddled in their beds
Little minds filled up with cheer
As the gentle chime of Christmas bells
Seemed to whisper in their ear

Jack Frost had left his frigid breath
On doors and panes of glass
Whilst a crystalline blanket
covered every blade of grass

A sense of joyful warmth
Spilled from every single home
Filled the night with candle light
For those left out alone

For there betwixt the moonlight
And the icy bite that stings
Amongst the carol singers
And the festive songs they bring

Behind the sparkling scenery
There rests a pair of eyes
As cold as stone
They have no home
The shadows, their disguise

For no one seems to notice
The body by the wall
All coiled up
Not feeling loved
Left shivering to the bone

Their voice trails off into the sounds
of jubilant Christmas cheer
Their battling the elements
Yet no one seems to hear

They are the hidden reality
The plight in winters song
A fragment thought
In prayers their caught
Yet still they don’t belong

Their Christmas brings the gift of pain
All hidden in plain sight
For these poor souls
The miracle
is if they make it through the night...

There were candy canes
and glittered stars
A plethora of lights

There was a body on the pavement
With eyes like stone
and bones of ice

A deep.deep write Gwen with beautiful flow and word choices. As ever the two tier system...some in winter wonderland and others staring through the gate but this is not necessarily about physical  homelessness ...it also could be applied to homelessness of the spirit and very often no cure is ever found for that...hugs 💞💞

You have shone an amazingly bright light on subject matter that has been around since governing bodies first began.......Pre-Bible!!.......But what you have done here is to place blame where it truly belongs.....on ALL of us.....we look away everyday.....and we can feel those eyes peering from the shadows.....still, we put money in the collection jars in front of stores and think we've actually done something.....but we KNOW we have not!!......the problem will persist.....until things like the power of poetry such as this STELLAR
slap in the face is exalted, revered, and finds its way to the masses!!.....PINNED!!......A most profound 'write of true import!!......Bravo GWEN!!......truly moving!!......LOVE & ROCKETS!!.........T xo  :  )

Tony, as ever you see deeply the errors of our ways. It does not surprise me that you do. Your mind is open and it’s beautiful to witness. Yes I think all of us are to blame for this sort of tragedy to still be happening. I often think how much money the council here spends on lighting up the city with festive decorations, when really our first priority should be ensuring life is saved. But no, we decorate a town and cover up the bodies shivering in the wings. And we do this to bring more festive warmth to the shoppers who go home to warm homes and Christmas trees of their own. Makes me sick inside

Anyway my friend, I waffle. But your words hit a chord and it’s one I have listened to for along time now. Wondering how I can get more people to hear it. To notice the error in our so called humanity

And now I will shut up lol x

Gwen, you have written an eloquently beautiful poem. It is deep. You feel that magical Christmas feeling and then the horror becomes all to apparent. Fabulous writing ✍ x

Hello Tina, I hope you are well my friend. Thank you for this wonderful feedback. That was my exact intent. To create that sugar candy Christmas that slips into a horrible reality. I think it is a subject muffled by festive cheer. Which is sad

Many thanks for the pin my friend. Hoping to pop and read more of you soon x

I doubt anyone can pass this by without awarding it the very toppest of marks .. the last line in particular took my breath away as it was so very unexpected .. despite the build up throughout .. Had to read through again to fully appreciate the insidious but mighty crescendo & crash of that last line .. yep.. it slaps the reader right in the face ..................... an enviably well crafted festive poem with a very deep and very real message to those who will almost certainly snuggle down before their roaring fires with a full belly this coming Christmas .. much like they always do, I expect ... I'm off to our local night shelter again, on the eve of the 24th as I have always done for the last 20 odd years so as the staff can have a well deserved break ...................................... This is certainly one of them posts I shall remember for a very long time ... N x

Neville you are one of those gems in life, the type that actively try and make a difference. Charity for me is a big thing. I have been a trustee for one such none profit for a while. I have discovered many horrors along the way. It opens your eyes and forces you to look beyond the glitz and glamour of the life we are more fortunate to know. Thanks for leaving your amazing words here against this little write. So glad you could see my intent. Thanks for pinning and all the best my friend. I hope the 24th you can reach many well deserved souls
