A CHRISTMAS LIE

Once a year Christmas comes aroundÂ
Excited children run aroundÂ
Play with the snow that fell on the groundÂ
Their laughs and jeers a welcome soundÂ
And on the floor presents resoundÂ
Rose red bows tied on gifts overnightÂ
Labelled to the joys of your lifeÂ
Stockings hang under flickering lightÂ
Entombed in the fires glowÂ
When you turn off the lightÂ
Yay itâs Christmas dayÂ
Time to wipe the sleep from those weary eyesÂ
Run downstairsÂ
To get your big surpriseÂ
Then wipe the tears of joy from your eyesÂ
So many presentsÂ
An overwhelming sight , to delightÂ
To the presents delivered to your room overnightÂ
Didnât seem that long since youâd said goodnightÂ
Laid in your bedÂ
Sleep you tried to fightÂ
Now a mass of presents cover the seatÂ
you sat in last nightÂ
How did everything magically appear over night?Â
How did they know what you wanted?
You wrote a letter
No one ever respondedÂ
Didnât this make you wonder?
Ten years on from when this story begunÂ
Your hopes and dreams are shattered Â
But whatâs it matter
Youâve been lied too for years and yearsÂ
Santaâs not realÂ
I hear you squealÂ
So whatâs the big deal?
Is it right to kiss your child at nightÂ
Tell them Santaâs coming as you turn off the lightÂ
Give  them false hopes and dreamsÂ
As you  run runabout until you run out of steamÂ
Gathering all the presents in the house
 Take them downstairs
Place them under the treeÂ
There is no santaÂ
Just mummy and daddyÂ
Donât you think your child would still feel happy
With the truth, not this notion of figmentation?Â
You teach your children not to lieÂ
But what do you doÂ
You turn the truth into a lie
By telling themÂ
Each and every yearÂ
Here comes santaÂ
Listen for his jolly laughÂ
Listen for the reindeer that will never cross your pathÂ
And when your older and you are told the truthÂ
Your childhood that you once remembered
Goes up in cindersÂ
And santa is no longer a memory that lingers
Just a fabricationÂ
Of what you were toldÂ
To boost your imagination
When you were younger  Â

Yes Jeff there is a Santa he may not be a jolly old fella but he is the amalgamation of you imagination. He is in the hearts of all who give at Christmas. to those that buy extra gifts and put them in toys for tots. or the ones that put extra money in the offering basket in church. Santa isn't a person but in the hearts of all that wish he was. a wonderful well written piece Jeff.
lol your not getting the meaning. to be told something exists for years and years then have your childhood crushed isnt fair lol. i know how i felt when i found out santa didnt come down the chimney and mum and dad portrayed santa. i found out at the age of six santa wasnt real when i caught my parents bringing the gifts from a secret hiding place upstairs lolÂ
I do get the poem. it was told at five there is no Santa. I am simply saying there is one in the imagination of others
Hi  Jeff Your poem is good well written
But i have to totally agree with Lisa :-)
I know what your saying but Christmas is such a magicalÂ
time for children i see no harm in letting them believe in SantaÂ
I believed until i was 9 in him, my children the same age,
and still even knowing at 9 i used to think perhaps
Santa still came and left  just one special present just from him I was`nt affected badly
by knowing the truthÂ
I think if it was taken as a horrible lie  by children why would that child you lied to
still hold the tradition with their own children and their children and their children
As Lisa said  there is a Santa  in the imagination of all But i guess we all have our own opinion
and that`s fine:-)
Great write Â
Best wishes DebsÂ

Hey Jeff. :) I was never allowed to believe in Santa and ruined a few friends Christmas when I told them the truth. Of course they didn't believe me, lol, but their folks got mad at me for trying. I'm still iffy on the whole issue myself because Santa does exist on some level. He doesn't arrive with gifts, but he is the embodiment of the selfless giving spirit. Great write my friend. :) Rebecca
Hey... just me...good point in your poem. Glad I read it. As for me, I was raised on the truth of CHRISTmas. I never felt I missed out on a thing. My friends always wanted to be at our home on the holidays, as did all family and neighbors dropping in. So funny -we were poor, but had more love, fun and excitement and company- at our place than anyone around!...yet they all taught Santa Clause. our home was quite different. I was blessed to have such memories. We also had a tree -under the tree Mother placed a manger scene (to remind us of the best gift of all....JESUS) presents , the works...but knew truth on who the presents were from. My mother always said Satan and Santa were the same. (Same letters just scrambled!)She said and he loves to get his claws(Clause) in our children if he can! It is the world's way of taking away from the truth of Christmas ....Jesus birth. I agree with she and Dad. On Christmas eve we all gathered around Mom, Bible open on her lap and she would read us the Christmas story from LUKE Chapter 2 KJV. Then, we would all go to bed. I know I won't receive the popular vote on this comment I'm sure. Some may even get mad. But, that's o.k. I know the truth. JESUS. I would not want to be without him.  I enjoyed the truth that came out in your poetry....Have a blessed week.....and thank you......for telling the truth. I am sorry you went through that.    Paula
that was well said paula i never even new satan and santa were alike until you pointed it out thank you i might just go home and read that chapter of LUKE.
Ah! Thank you....glad I helped!   Take care   Paula
