A Dark Shadow

Speak to me in your own languish
For I want to know you for what you are
Not made up to make me believe in you
But just to know we are different makes the difference
To have different skin, to have different eyes, to know the world has brought us together
I want to know more of your culture, your native ways
My grandfather was a Cherokee, my grandmother a Shawnee
What makes us different, our footprints, our language
But our souls are the same even in a dark shadow
Our love making, our desires, to live, and die in no shame
We shall breathe the same air
And I will know no other in vain, in the spirit of our sky
We are all gods children, brothers, and sisters, the earth below us, the rivers beneath us.Â
Our scars and wounds healed by the sunÂ
In the heat of the summer we keep cool by the shade
In the cold of the winter we keep warm by the fireÂ
As the dark of the shadow calls out our name the same
