A Grim October
A grim morning in October
The dark stark truth festers in the air
Sunken eyes despise the promise of winters sting
Let us remain paused in agonising thoughts
These fallen leaves seem so fittingly laid on this sorrowful soil
Ash sodden
Soon to be forgotten
Let us dredge up every memory ever sewn
To remember
That what once
Was flesh and bone

Wonderful poem
Many thanks Greg for always dropping by and reading my poems :) Thank kindly for your pin and vote too. You are a genuinely good human my friend. Many of us here value you greatly x
You are so welcome
Hi Gwen, hope you are very well. This is a very powerful poem that highlights remembrance and the tragic heartbreak, angst and anguish in grief. The words dredge, ash sodden and fester convey lingering misery in all it´s forms. The lines, ´´That what once was flesh and bone´´ portray humanity in grief. An excellent artistic expression of darkest grief upon the human condition within the mind´s eye. Beautiful poignant writing. Thank you! XX
Hello Tony :) so lovely to have you stop by and leave your wonderful words here on my poem. Many many thanks for such a vivid feedback. You are correct of course. Death in the family this week dropped it out of me. So glad the imagery spoke to you. Thanks so much for the like and vote. I hope life is treating you well

Hi Gwen, after reading again there are similarities with the Great War poet, Wilfred Owen´s poetry, that tells of his own personal intense experience of war and whose aim was to portray the pity of war for his generation and has been influential upon how human conflict is perceived today. Although a harrowing read, a fine tribute of remembrance to Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon(his mentor) and Rupert Brooke et al. Reading poetry of this calibre, life is indeed treating me well. Sorry to hear of your loss. Superb writing, Thank you! XX
Wow Tony, I wasn’t anticipating such compliments. Thank you ever so much. I love reading poetry and discovering the many classics out there. To have such poets mentioned against my own poem just makes me beam :) thank you for the smile today. I am not surprised to learn you too read a lot of classic poets. Your own writing is so vivid and very well constructed. I hope you are keeping well and thank you for the kind words

it feels very much a contradiction in terms suggesting that I like these words .. but of course I do ... and like them a lot .. not of course for the pain of loss that may have been endured & likewise might have inspired them .. but because you so eloquently paint such a vivid picture of cold stark reality that many of us will be able to relate to .. both perfectly poemed and otherwise apt for this time of year .. and to mark the approach of the last days of WW1 .. in my opinion nowt short of excellent ................................................................ N x
Gosh Neville you grace me with such wonderful compliments. To suggest my words reflect upon a part of history, that has truly left a scar in time, is a touching thing to say indeed. I can only give you thanks for feeling a connection towards such an event that should never be forgotten. Thank you my friend for you kind and moving feedback

GWEN ~ having gone through what you have gone through of late...I am not surprised by these astonishingly well crafted phrasings that bloom into the imagery of melancholy and profound sadness.....I think Tony (above) has summed it up perfectly ~
~ "An excellent artistic expression of darkest grief
upon the human condition....."

Tony, thank you for these words of kindness. You are a true friend, and you might not realise it, but you have done a lot for me my friend. Thank you Lorna for your beautiful attentive words. I am so grateful for your kindness xx
Hi love...so many sincere hugs❤...I recognise the bitterness of course and the helplessness and grief that pours from every word but its more than that isn't it...there is an aftertaste of bewilderment that never leaves us again Gwen. You have written such powerful words Gwen, describing the blackest of moments, in your words, I can actually not only picture the scene but feel it very deeply. There is little left to trust after deep deep loss...not the earth or sky or air ever again... Hugs ❤❤❤
So true my friend, the big losses change us. There is no turning back. It's like the bubble has burst. We see life very differently from then on. Thank you for your empathy, which I wish you never had ❤ hugs xxx
Oh I say, I certainly didn't see that ending coming Gwen and what an ending to reflect on and also poem too.
Super and original as always, for having read many of your poems, there is a delicious feeling one is in for a real treat in the theme you select and the style you write it.
An enthralling chameleon poet who has access to a rainbow's multitude of colours.
And knows how to express each and even bodily layer each when needed.
Thanks Gwen for being you and how you gloriously write and I wish you well my friend. x.
