A Love Arranged

We sat at that table on the basis of pretend.

For you already had a love with which I could not even begin to contend. 

I was in the same situation as you, already basking in a love so true.
  
Neither of us believed in a love this fake, but we had to pull it off for our parents sake. 
  
We were made solely to repeat history, but we broke that silly old tradition, and made our own love stories. 

To others, it looked like our sparks flew, if only they really knew just how bleak the air quickly grew. 

Under the guise of inebriation, our emotions grew strong.

We were suffocating in this thick stagnation. We both agreed that this love was wrong. 

As we got to your place, you confessed to me of your love to someone else. 

That was the first time all night that I was able to read what you truly felt. 

In lieu of a night filled with sweat and regret, we spent hours telling tales of the ones that we truly yearned for, in every detail. 

And through a moment of sobriety, we felt elated knowing we were the same. But then, we sunk into a pitiful dread. 

Even if we both realized that this love wasn’t fated, we were still meant to make vows and wed. 

For the day of our wedding had already been set.
