A Shadow
My shadow follows me around,
Shaped how I can imagine guilt would look.
Carrying a gun in one hand,
In the other, a hook.
It won’t let me leave,
It wants me to suffer.
Searching for the flare to keep going,
Is getting tougher.
Someone handed me a coffin yesterday,
It was a little overdue.
It was me smiling at the world,
A dead view.
I closed the coffin,
And continued with my day.
I’ll forget about it soon,
I will find a way.
But wait,
It didn’t have a shadow.
In fact, the body’s gone,
The coffin’s hollow.
My shadow has grown stronger,
It’s speaking to me.
“I’m trying to help you”,
“Can’t you see?”
I’m going to unlock the door,
Let the shadow in.
It’s the right thing to do,
I let him win.
