Poem -

Absent

My name is Sarah
And I am 15
I like school and music and dancing with my friends.
My name is Sarah
There's these boys at my school
I long for them to leave me be.
"My name is Sarah." I chant to myself as
They smoke and shout, all while he
Sneers a callous smile, puffed up like a balloon.
My name is Sarah
I thought I was well behaved-Β
I've never touched a cigarette. Never wanted to drink beer
But they blow smoke in my face
And pour cider down my shirt.
Until the white of my blouse turns clear.
My name is Sarah
And I said no
But that didn't make a difference.Β
My name is Sarah
And that's all I've got leftΒ
That I can truly call mine anymore.Β Β
