Adopted

Adopted

Rejected at birth
The blameless baby in the row of cribs
Attended 4 hourly by the Catholic nuns
This is how it ended
Your night of passion and fun.

ADOPTED
But You weren't quite right
Not quite the quiet and docile child that they had wanted

16
Thrown out on a cold and snowy winters night
And told no longer to return

24
Your first child
Rejected by her father
BUT NOT BY YOU
You would try to make her feel wanted

26
Your second child
Rejected by his father
But you would hold him to your breast
And shelter him from harm

30
Your third child
Rejected by her father
You thought that maybe she'd be better off without you
But you couldn't adopt her
And so you kept her anyway

33
Death Approaches
Cancer has taken you
And death dances its long and painful waltz with you
Abandoned
Who wants a mother of 3 with cancer?

36
The Exile
Into the Wilderness
Far from the maddening crowds
Apart from life
Penance in the commune

40
Lost in a hole so deep
You didn't know whether you'd ever climb out

50
They are all grown now
You have a granddaughter
A reward for being a mother

52
Alone again
Time to begin anew
To cut through the darkness
And find a new reason
For going through
