Ailments

Ailments

With weepy eyes, she ticks off her long list of indispositions.
Check! She has that. Check! She has this.

Each tear drop becomes a statement.
She never knew, heartbreak was an ailment.

Every lover that clung to her sheets, now a piece of history
An art form they’d created, a dark sexual mystery.

Each tear drop becomes a statement.
She never knew, heartbreak was an ailment.

She misses him, but she also misses her. What she doesn’t question is, does anyone miss me?
When they’ve left, she’s alone. Peace. Quiet. Free.

Each tear drop becomes a statement.
She never knew, heartbreak was an ailment.

She tells herself, the symptoms include depression, nausea and emptiness.
She tells herself, the side effects are disorder, loneliness and a colossal mess.

Each tear drop becomes a statement.
She never knew, heartbreak was an ailment.

Pills and potions cannot fix this
Drugs and alcohol, she cannot mix this

Now each tear drop has become a statement.
She now knows heartbreak is an ailment.
