I never like to sleep alone
I fear you’ll come unbidden.
I sometimes find I talk to you
my thoughts from you not hidden
I’m braver now than once I was
I sleep without the light,
but still I know you visit me
and usually at night.
No matter where I travel to
at some point I will see
reminders that I’m in your sights,
you’re keeping tabs on me.
I’m not like you, don’t feel like you
I’m just an earthly being,
to you I’m just a species strange
that’s all you’re ever seeing.
You’ve never hurt me, or at least
if so, then I don’t know it.
I must be scared but keep my calm
and hope I never show it
Sometimes I wonder if perhaps
I’m specially selected,
I even hope that maybe we
in some way are connected.
It’s fifty years since that first time
I saw your craft so near,
and thinking back my heart still pounds
and I can taste my fear.
Since then I’m not the only one
you also know my son,
we know for sure that you are real
soon, so will everyone.
