Alone

Alone

And sometimes I wonder,

if we simply congregate here

in this meager church,

not because we crave salvation,

but because we don't want to be alone.

In heaven we are greeted straightaway

with answers and sweet nothings

and inside the gates

everyone we love awaits.

Why do we believe?

Why do we sit here with strangers who do?

We refuse,

we refuse to be alone.

We want each other to save each other.

We are not godless heathens--

we are lonely and we are scared.

We are here because we need to believe

that even when we are alone

kneeling beside our beds

intimately vulnerable

someone is there to hear us.

We can never be alone.

Gina Marie, you are one deep thinking perceptive poet, I must say, and this church you speak of may even include poetry sites and even sporting events and other places; that's how I'm reading it anyway, lol....I suppose nobody really likes being alone, and fortunately, we live in an age where even if we are in some remote area of the world, we don't have to feel alone... and in a literal sense the church I attend has members who plan their social lives around funerals, weddings and every function the church has, not saying that it's wrong to do that, I suppose it is part of the purpose of a church, just that the poem made me think of them....and back to your poem, I can see you are a keen observer of people and you come outside yourself; not often easy for a poet... very subtle intelligence conveyed, great poem coming from an honest and unique place, a lovely read, well said....cheers, Gina

thank you, and i agree people enjoy congregating together no matter the event in our society it's somewhat abnormal to be alone or do some things alone. I also have experience with that, I know so many people who plan their lives from funeral to funeral, wedding to wedding; idk this poem was about a lot of things, it started kind of with the philosophy of a church but really it's about everything how people cannot do things alone, be alone, can't do something without posting/blogging about it for other people. People are scared to be alone, which is understandable of course but only to a certain degree.
