An English Day Out

The church bells were ringing
As we headed out
That Sunday,
I, two couples and another friend

We headed down to the riverĀ
And alighted a boat
Rowing downstream for
two hours
Past reeds and trees,
Swans and cygnets

Till we reached a riverside hotel
And disembarked.
Inside the hotel were
wooden beams
Portraits hung upon the wall.

The waitress brought us
Tea, cream and scones
We were sat there chatting
And laughing
For over an hour

Then we rowed back
To the village
And headed to the
King's Head pub
Where we sampled ales

Until we were merry
Sat by the firelight
As the sun set
And we grew hungry.

We went back to my home
Where my lovely wife had
Cooked Shepherd's pie
And stewed apple

Then tired and happy
We went our separate ways;
My friends headed down the lane
As the church bells chimed 11pm.
