I've Been Around Long Enough

I’ve Been Around Long Enough

I’ve been around long enough,
Seen enough,
To know not to feel emotional pain
Seen to many relationships fail,
Too many happy scenarios fade.

I’ve worried too much to know
That it doesn’t pay.
If things are going to go wrong
They’ll go wrong anyway.
God is asleep, or doesn’t care
I’ve seen enough to know
He doesn’t answer prayers.

I’ve placed too much value in the past
On things that disappear anyway.
We don’t know when it will happen
Or always what to say
When it does,
But it happens anyway.

Another mass shooting in America;
More revelations of child abuse:
Chuck loads of money at it,
But what’s the use?

I’ve seen too much go wrong
To know things go wrong
Seen too much to be an optimist,
And so it is I’m a calmly resigned realist.

And as the years pass,
I see that achieving most pleasures
Messes with your health
And imperils financial measures.

Onwards and onwards
Till we take our last breath
Caring for things that don’t last
Till we take our own last breath.

The fish of the sea

A sense of personified context really engages the reader throughout. Extremely deep and relatable poetry. Enjoyed Michael. Hope you are well.
