An Innocent Heart
An Innocent Heart
Within these cold walls of stone
Lies an innocent heart left all alone
He lives in a world of everlasting night
How he prays his heart could take flight
The shadows on the wall his only friends
Will his lonely hours ever come to an end?
He tries to see beyond the steel bars
Carefully bandages his many battle scars
He has never given his heart to another
He has never known a faithful lover
His heart still remains innocent and pure
But the closing in of the walls he must endure
He never sees the sun high in the sky
But he has to believe that angels can fly
Daylight gently streams through the cracks
A winding road can he ever find his way back
How he longs to gaze upon the night’s stars
But the path to freedom seems so very far
Wonders will he be a prisoner till he grows old
These walls of steel and rock cannot hold his soul
His nightly prayers to God are softly spoken
And now his restless spirit is all but broken
Both hands and feet in shackles and chains
Are his many dreams of freedom all in vain?
For His life thus far has not been very kind
Hopefully he will find peace of heart and mind
