ANOTHER CHILD IS DEAD

Today I woke with the echo of a little girl lost and pleading
To the man that had taken her from her home, taken her young life
A tiny soul now wanders alone and thinks about the family
Who will never get to see her become a teenager, woman, mother, or wife?
Where is it safe, how will our children grow with love and laughter?
Now we watch them play in silence, staring through the locks on doors
And, in the dead of night a stranger sits out there waiting
For everyone to go to sleep, thinking that their children are secure
Dawn approaches, and the wail of sirens breaks through our reverie
And the papers cry out once again, “Another Child Is Dead!”
This heartache will never be erased, and nothing returns to normal
And as the darkness falls on us each night we try to hide our dread
How do we protect God's angels from further harm and heartache?
And how will our children keep their innocence and laughter
What must we do to change the system that refuses to protect them
When criminals are sent back into the street, it is our children that they're after
God in heaven hear our voices hear our pleas
Give us strength to fight the forces that still roam our lands
Precious little angels that you have given us to teach
Are the ones that get locked in prisons, and they do not understand…
