Anxiety, My Old Friend

Anxiety, My Old Friend

There was a time when I was afraid to speak,
My heart would pound and I'd say nothing.
There was a fear that lived inside my bones,
It would poison my heart and keep me alone.
There was a voice that echoed inside my mind,
"People will hate you if you give them the time."

When I looked beneath the fear, beneath the pain,
I realized I had to trust my heart to silence my brain.

May I asume that if you are using the past in your poetry, does that mean that you learned how to overcome your "old friend"?
Honestly, I am curious about the answer. (i hope he doesn't bring you down too much)Β
