As we stand

It's understood exclusively by the very young and very old,
That we needn't make excuses for what we feel and do.
It's no use being unique, if you do as you are told,
We are all part of the many, but there's only one of you.
Society is bound by laws we needn't speak,
We stay quiet on trains and apologise when we stutter.
I wish for a world without these rules, for just one week,
Where plastic niceties were gone, kicked to the gutter.
Our air is thick with the fog of grey emotion,
We use the maps on our phones to guide us through.
But don't forget to message your thanks and devotion,
To the man that you hate, who so loves you.
We parody politicians and celebrity culture,
Now they're one and the same to save us time.
Perfect teeth speak the words of vapid vultures,
That cling to the brink, while promising it will be fine.
I'm tired of this phony world and dayglow night,
Looking for authenticity is now in vogue.
I wonder if we can ever manage to put it right,
Or whether we are destined to go up in smoke.

Hello Ben...
Welcome to Cosmo!
Funny you should mention smoke...
My family is in the way of Hurricane Irma with Tropical Storm Jose which may tturn into a Hurricane tonight right behind her...
I have a haze and smoke all around me from Wildfires...
Great write!
Great message!
Thank you for sharing...
Hugs...

Hey, good luck, stay strong and stay together.
Thinking of you
Ben
So true. I hate how basically the whole point of our lives now is to try and impress others, living for everyone else.
Thank you for reading! I just find it so frustrating. It has the most effect on people who try to be different, they're round pegs having to push themselves through square holes!
