At Mother's Teat

At Mother's Teat

Sunday morning

Seven minutes to seven

Out-born

Towel-wrapped

Head to feet

Up for breakfast

At mother’s teat

Sucking

Milk as sweet and succulent

As the marzipan and chocolate

She loved to eat

Inside

As sunshine shone

Through bedroom curtain crack

Outside

A cold wind blew

From east to west

Through post-war

Germany

A country

Down on its knees

Defeated

A continent

By an iron curtain

Divided

And

A world once more

At war

In far off Korea

But

Out-born

Towel-wrapped

Head to feet

Up for breakfast

At mother’s teat

Sucking

Milk as sweet and succulent

As the marzipan and chocolate

She loved to eat…….

For me the safest, best, most peaceful,

Restful place to be.
