Bat, Bats, Batty

Bat, Bats, Batty

(circa 1996)

The first wife and I drive up to Vermont,

driving past and Lake George

then veering east into Vermont.

Farms,  cows,  mountains,  green fields,

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

We drive by Lake Bomoseem with the sun setting.

I pull the ugly brown Gremlin over

and take out my fishing rod and tackle box.

I cast out my fishing line at

this perfect time to hook into a lunker.

Bats fly around and the wife says,

“Be careful a bat does not get caught in your hair!”

What a wives’ tale…bats in the hair. Please!

On the second cast,  a bat flies down

and hits me on the crown of my head.

Fishing I like;

not getting rabies I like better.

I reel in my line and get back in the car

and drive to Gumby’s home.
