Beal na Blath

in memory of Michael Collins

Beal na Blath

Shots rang out across the sky
the day another hero died
and starlings did not dare to fly
that day in Beal na Blath

A visionary we did not know
who's vision helped a nation grow
but like many he had to go
that day in Beal na Blath

A rebel to drive an empire out
waged war to end eternal rout
but romantics slayed him in their doubt
that day in Beal na Blath

Courage born from tales of pride
yet toxic green made all choose side
as he tried to reach across divide
that day in Beal na Blath

Oh Michael can you see us now?
the nation still is lost somehow
too much wrong we did allow
since that day in Beal na Blath.
