Black Buttons
Two black buttons
Laying on the ground
They probably belong to somebody
But there's no one around
They're dark like shadows
But glimmer in the night
Like the mystery of obsidian
That shows in starlight
At one time they were eyes
Sewn onto a girls doll
But these eyes, these black buttons
Are what caused her downfall
For she was the only one with them,
These two black button eyes
And the other dolls made fun of her
Until she looked at herself in despise
Why was I made so different?
Why can't I be like the rest?
I hate these eyes, really I do
Is this some sort of test?
Then one day,
Just as she was beginning to give up
She felt a hand on her shoulder,
And he helped her up
He said to her,
You're eyes are like nothing I've seen
They remind me of lost galaxies
I don't understand why they're all so mean
And she smiled
Smiled for the first time in a while
Maybe this was just a test,
Is this a reward for her trial?
The next day he looked at her leg
And said there's something quite odd
How can you have deep oceans in your eyes,
But a leg like a dog?
She looked at herself and said
I have two, I can do without one
It's just a leg, he likes my eyes
Really, I've still won
The next day he looked at her arm
And said that's definitely not right
Why are your eyes sweet like licorice
But your arm sewn so tight?
It's my left arm, she said
I don't use it anyway
I still have my right, he likes my eyes
Today really isn't a bad day
The next day it was her hair,
The next her nose,
How long this kept going
Nobody knows
Eventually the boy only saw two eyes
Two black buttons on the ground
And then he walked away
And pretended nobody was around
