Cemetery Eyes

Sepia images of people long passed
War widows with cemetery eyes
Proud soldiers,terrified young men
They never got to say their goodbyes
Faded memories of days long since gone
Replaced by wistful recollection.
Foreign fields soaked in blood
Gravestones.
Marble white
Battlefields regenerated
Houses where once proud men stood
Poppy fields silent in the sun
Sentinels of remembrance.
