Ceremony of shame

She trembled in anticipation
Dressed in white the perfect bride
She was surrounded by people
Who nodded and who smiled,
They were all apart of creating this ceremony,
Even though she did not want this,
Even though she was under age,
The marriage ceremony and this bond
Had been created well beyond
Her power to control or resist,
She was here Powerless
And if she had run
And if she had hid,
Her family would have paid the price for it,
They would have to live, a life of shame
She could not allow this in her name,
Her groom who was so much older
Went to great lengths to let her know that,
There was no choice
And no way out,
Of this fact she had no doubt.
So married she was, though under age
Another victim of legalised child abuse and no doubt rape,
All of this against her will
No chance to appeal,
Or show her rage
It's a ceremony of shame.

A powerful piece, friend. I have a magnitude of respect and admiration for you after having read it. It's difficult to write about such topics and to have your work flow and make sense at the same time. The reason being that you're so passionate and drawn to what you're creating that you forget about everybody else but you and your poetry. I humbly congratulate you on this piece for it is truly the best thing I have read today.Β

Thank you very much, I was aware of its possible controversy and possible offence some may take but its too much of an important message I feel to go unsaid. Its bigger than me and I was lost in it. I really appreciate that you read it and it was so well received by yourself. Open minds and eyes alway see and understand truth.Β
Arranged marriages should have gone the way of the sacrificial lamb and been done away with a long, long time ago.
It's such an antiquated, out-dated custom.
It's especially more than a little disturbing when a child is betrothed to someone ten times her age.
How a grown man could possibly be aroused by a ten-year-old child is beyond me.
It's disgusting!
Good awareness write, Fauxcroft.
More people need to raise their voices against this horrid tradition.

Thank you once again Dean for reading, I could not agree more with you.Β
Anytime, Fauxcroft.
Take care...
