Cradle to Grave

Cradle to Grave

At the day of your birth
You're exposed to the world:
A helpless baby boy
or a girl
Exposed to a life of uncertainty
Where nothing can be counted on
In reality.

Mediocre schools;
Redundancy at work.
You never do know where
The danger will lurk
And though it may be
Security you seek
Uncertainty pervades the days
And the weeks.

The fear- it does last
For three score years and ten
Until you breathe your last
Though you never know
Quite where or when
The body you have,
Live with and sustain
Will pull the rug from your feet
Putting an end to your pain.

Then they'll hold a funeral
Feeling much sorrow
Knowing that they will not
See you tomorrow.
Perhaps it doesn't matter:
You gave it your best shot
You start your life pure
And end with what you've got.
