Crossing Bridges

On the 14th of November
A tiny six year old
Created a day to remember
Walking steadfast and bold

During a time of social unrest
When segregation was law
Little Ruby addressed
This lawless bylaw

As she stepped into the school
She rewrote the future
Walking past intentions that where cruel
Becoming desegregation’s suture

“I have a dream”
The pinnacle of the civil rights
Would still be a daydream
Without Ruby and her foresight

As this day draws near
Once more
The growing civil rights fear
Is just outside the door.

We all must become Ruby Bridges
And look past the hateful lies
Pushing it back down to tiny smidges
Love and unity we have to emphasize

For all in society to flourish
We must stand together
Teach our young, in them we must nourish
United there’s no storm we cannot weather

Live without hate
Love without limits
Never again segregate
And leave anything off-limits...
