Crossing Bridges

On the 14th of NovemberÂ
A tiny six year oldÂ
Created a day to rememberÂ
Walking steadfast and bold
During a time of social unrestÂ
When segregation was law
Little Ruby addressedÂ
This lawless bylawÂ
As she stepped into the school
She rewrote the futureÂ
Walking past intentions that where cruelÂ
Becoming desegregation’s sutureÂ
“I have a dream”
The pinnacle of the civil rights
Would still be a daydream
Without Ruby and her foresightÂ
As this day draws near
Once more
The growing civil rights fearÂ
Is just outside the door.Â
We all must become Ruby BridgesÂ
And look past the hateful lies
Pushing it back down to tiny smidges
Love and unity we have to emphasize
For all in society to flourishÂ
We must stand togetherÂ
Teach our young, in them we must nourishÂ
United there’s no storm we cannot weatherÂ
Live without hate
Love without limits
Never again segregateÂ
And leave anything off-limits...
