A DAY OUT

They all have their reasons to be there
The fellowship of outdated philosophy
Was the magnet that filled the pews
The righteousness imbued in an atmosphere
Of reverence
Is a great pull
They come to seek him above

A sermon that often lacks topical credibility
No longer lingers in the mind
The ritual is well known
And belief may eventually come
As it overcomes rote and familiarity

Followers of faith
On their day of rest
On their weekly outing
To pay homage to dead saviours
That make no appearance
But are fondly held
In the hope that salvation may be offered

The bread and the wine
The body of the once man now god
Imparts hope
A drink of peace
A morsel of relief
From a life not always meeting the ideal

Hollow may be the tenets
That disbelief cannot conquer
Empty may be the pleasures that now can give
The flock though dwindling still exists
They all come for the fraternity

A day to get blessed
A day to forget reality
A day to embrace your conscience
A day to let him see you know he exist
