Dinner With Baryshnikov
Inspired by my friend Kevin
.
In the Summer of nineteen seventy-nine, Baryshnikov came to town;
At the Cincinnati Ballet’s venue, danced this man of great renown!
My ex-wife was on it’s committee, we had season great box seats;
I was looking very forward, this legend, that night to meet!
.
He brought with him six dancers, all very talented in his eyes;
He himself did two performances, with plie’s perfection precise!
The first one was a comedy, about a coquettish Harlequin;
With a big surpriseful ending, that made us laugh and grin!
.
But then, for the grand finale, he performed a Najinsky piece;
He came flying past the curtains, six feet high he deftly leaps!
He did spins and jet quick Jetes, he took our breaths away;
Watching this great virtuoso, was the zenith of all my days!
.
After the ballet ended, we went to a grand hotel;
For a Midnight “Dinner With Baryshnikov”, our progeny all to tell!
Before it started, they greeted us, he and his Troupe all shook our hands;
One of the greatest thrills of my lifetime, to meet this gifted man!

How I Love your narratives LARRY!!...... this is so beautifully executed within the lines ....the rhyming with Jetes and Plies..... is so subtly placed making the write a kind of ballet itself......I met Baryshnikov once at The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.......I worked there and got to meet some pretty cool people but when I saw this short guy jump clean over the head of this woman backstage....I knew I was witnessing something VERY special...... that same summer the powers that be asked me to drive for ALICIA ALONSO for six days while she was doing a short run there...... she was nearing the end of her career but was another amazing dancer that I was lucky enough to see perform and in her case..... was able to speak with at length....... anyway, I'm sure we could go on & on with these types of stories......thanx for sharing this my friend!!......I Pinned this one because it's one of personal fav's!!.......TTYL!!........T xo
Dear Tony,
Your words of adulation have danced their way into my heart and Soul. As usual, they are those of perfection.
I know exactly what you mean, when you talk about Baryshnikov jumping clean over the head of a woman, as I too saw him effortlessly fly through the air, six feet high. It is so wonderful that you got to meet him too. I was not familiar with ALICIA ALONSO, but Linda and I just pulled up her bio, and saw that she was a tremendously talented Prima Ballerina from Cuba. It also said she had a degenerative eye condition, and eventually was almost totally blind. It must have been unbelievable for you to converse with her for six days, I'm sure something you will never forget.
Peace, Love, and Plies,
Larry xxx
