Directions for Falling in Love or Attending a Circus

I.Â
Something in you keeps dissolving likeÂ
sugar. Not to say you’re sweet on theÂ
tongue. You’re hell-bent on destruction.Â
Prone to obsession and sending tooÂ
many emails. His army has surroundedÂ
you, the man with the cigarette andÂ
the scarf over his eyes. They’ll fireÂ
rapidly but he never dies quickly. TheÂ
dream is always in slow motion. LikeÂ
his hand when he slaps you. KeepÂ
remembering how he still breathesÂ
without you. Savor the hurt, it onlyÂ
gets worse. So beautifully worse.Â
II.Â
You’d never know this but you’re aÂ
natural ladder-walker. Just don’t stepÂ
under it. It’s okay to let glitter fallÂ
in your eyes, but never thinkÂ
about the elephants. They’re tooÂ
much like you, tethered to invisibleÂ
strings. Don’t gasp when the lion eatsÂ
its trainer, it happens all the time.Â
It’s familiar to you somehow, anyways.  Â
Something about beggars and ChineseÂ
girls on bicycles. Or perhaps fire-eatersÂ
and rodeos. Never fall for clowns, they’llÂ
trick you into thinking you’re happy.Â
Study the acrobats. Dizzying, dazzling,Â
demeaning. Don’t cry when the trapezeÂ
artist falls, it’s inevitable, she’ll tuck andÂ
drop like a stone. Like when you see hisÂ
face and you’re sliding, sliding, the ropeÂ
tattered and frayed in your hands.Â
Your mouth gone sweet and dry as cotton candy. TellÂ
yourself to finally step up and see.Â
Welcome to the show.
