"...don’t go to work today.”

"...don’t go to work today.”

My glasses fogged with my first sip of the steaming tea,
Everything suddenly appeared in a haze,
When I felt something soft, something silky brush my feet.
I put my glasses back on after wiping them clear,
Your feet having strayed out from under the duvet.

Such dainty feet you have,
They fit so snug in my palms
As an infant would in its mother’s embrace.
Your toes looked like pearls adorning your soles,
Painted glossy with your favourite black nail-paint.
Your feet flushed pink of the winter’s chill, as if
You took a walk bare feet upon dew drenched roses.

The now empty tea cup in hand,
Sitting right there on the bed,
I wandered through a world of my own-
Dewdrops, pearls, nail-paint, roses…
And places I can’t really recall;
So lost in thought, I never noticed the pillow
Which was hurled on to my entranced face.
Smarting with the sudden thump of warm cotton
And the clear ringing laughter in the room
Broke me out of my reverie, back to our bed.

Righting up my askew glasses,
You completely tousled up my hair.
Grabbed me by the collar of my nightshirt
And pulled me close to your face.
Gazing deep into my eyes,
With a naughty twinkle in yours, you whispered-
“Such a romantic weather, don’t go to work today.”

With a cascade of simple, crystalline images you build up a detailed picture.

Enchanting in its quotidian domesticity.

Wonderful!
