Dormant they lie

Pic = Mirror face (myself at the age of about 5 and the subject of the poem)

Dormant they lie

The now sun moves this son into an orbit
before his age, around those old fears.

Dormant they have lain, yet they lied to him
for all his life, slithering like snakes unseen
through his darker dreams, to catch his ways,
till the day rose,
he could no longer change gear.

His life vaulted back
to the eldest hours
when the source first
broke the surface.
Now a face in the mirror
without time’s wrinklings
is facing its future.

Can I be overwhelmed by that face?
Yes, but not yield to the temptation
to step back and live again
in the stronghold where I was born.
I am married nowadays
to the circles of wife, words and work.
Let that be my shield.

Yet all I have, is needed
to reach out, to speak out
and offer my tears up
to the Dark Mother,
to stand here without armour.

Mirror face lights up under this new rain
that washes away the years.

A new moment is borne to me
on that flow of waters.
Mirror face smiles tentatively,
silently asking, pleading
“Can I trust you?”.

I catch my breath
and give him
a kiss of life.

Thank you, it feels good to liberate myself from long term fears (hard work though it be) - the Dark Mother is "Notre Dame de Romigier" - a statue of a Black Madonna in Manosque, in the South of France. She had been on our list for years and this summer we finally managed to get there and - almost as usual - I broke into tears. I always do at a chucrch with a strong statue/image of Mother Mary (especially Balck Madonna's)... here is a link to a series of photo's...
