Dread locks

Dread locks

when i started growing my dread locks
it was for all the right reason
But many people didn’t understand
so they think that i was a bad person

people would look at us with dread locks
and they would cross the other side of street
sometimes they would walk out of a place
when we go to sit down and buy something to eat

some people that we knew all our lives
Some of whom we went to school with
Now the look at us with hate in their eyes
Like if we are aliens from another planet

Being Rastafarian at that in this society
The police would harass us all the time’
To them " if you are rasta then you were guilty
With out even committing a crime

It’s legal to buy cigarettes and alcohol
Get cancer or drunk and fall down
But when we choose to grow our hair
They point fingers saying we’re wrong

A true Rasta follows the holy book
Samson had seven dread locks of hair
go and read it see in "the vow of a Nazareth
Its there for all to see so plain and clear

me and my friends use to read the holy bible
The bagwhat gita and glorious noble Quran
it was the only way for us to gain knowledge
Is for us to read, discuss and understand

my friends were kind and very humble
some did not drink alcohol, and none eat pork
But people see us standing on the street
and they would go on the other side to walk

We use to only Smoked marijuana
At night time after the sun goes down
passing around couple joints among six of us
Rocking to some of the late bob Marley songs

The police thinks they had the right to abuse you
And send many innocents Rastas to jail
And the judge will ask for a lot of money
So they can never get out on bail

And for me being an Indian Rasta
the police and search me when ever they feels to
Then we all got tired of the harassment
And a lot of us cut off our dreadlocks as well

my dread locks was like a coconut tree
when i take my hat off it would spring up in the air
and many said i look just like bob marley
and they would tell me that when ever we go anywhere

I take out a lot of pictures of my dreadlocks
but today i just got one or two that's water damage
sometimes i wish i had a time machine
would be nice to go back to when i was that age

it was a time of innocence knowledge
knowledge that has showed me the way
And when I cut my dreadlocks it was a mistake
a mistake that I regret up till today?

I leave all the dread locks pictures i had
In Trinidad when I came to the USA
And many years after when I went back
They were destroyed or mistakenly thrown away

This is just a little part of my life story
A little history of my lifes background
Sometimes I want to keep on writing about everything
But if I don’t stop my poems will be way to long
