Every Grain Of Sand

Every Grain Of Sand

As the sands fell through the hourglass, that saddest of all days;

Each grain brought you nearer to the end, as they drained your life away!

I tried to turn it on its side, and reverse its’ deadly flow;

But no matter how hard, I cried and pled, I could not make it slow!

With every passing hour then, I watched, as you grew weak;

I rushed you to your Doctor Vet, for some counsel there to seek!

They said your little blood cells red, were almost at delete;

They gave me food and medicine, to try to this defeat!

For a while, the meds seemed to be working, for you quickened your slow pace;

But just a few short hours later, the grains began to race!

I thought some rest would stop them, so I laid you down to sleep;

But when daylight turned to darkness, your soul, the Lord did keep!

Now I live with constant heartbreak, I cry all day and night;

I live with the guilt of knowing, that I did not make it right!

For I couldn’t stop the grains from falling, and keep you here with me;

Now your memories, dreams and photographs, are all I’ll ever see!
