Every Wednesday

Hello Darling
Its Wednesday I always come
just to spend an hour with you.
Remember love we used
to meet every Wednesday.
At the old Blue Bell Inn
room 111 we met there
for fifteen years or more.
My God you were beautiful.
My heart was full of you
It still is darling.
I’m not a churchgoing man.
But I prayed to God everyday.
Thanking him for you.
We loved ourselves
silly in that old room.
I know we were both married
to others
you to Harry.
me to Maud..
Maud had the
church for a lover.
And old Harry
never found a pub
he didn't love.
At first I thought
it was just sex.
But when I realized
I was in love with you
It scared me to death..
But you held my hand
and said
It will be OK honey
We will manage
and we did.
Little Elsie was ours love.
She looks just like you love.
There’s never been anyone
For me but you honey.
There never will be.
The frail old man raised himself
up from the grass
leaning on his walking stick
for support.
I just wanted to drop by
and say I love you honey.
He turned to the gravestone
and gently touched her name.
Engraved on the granite.
Its golden filigree
glinting brightly
in the late autumn sunshine.
As though she knew
he was there.
“Bye Darling”
he whispered
“See you next Wednesday.”
